<-- Katniss Everdeen is a strong young woman in a movie. She is both smart and tough. She is also compassionate and willing to do what it takes to protect the people she loves.

Miss Ohio.
I know she was nervous, but COME ON. PRETTY WOMAN?!?!?!?! I don't think she could have mentioned a WORSE movie as far as modern depiction of women! I feel sorry for the girl, but my gosh. Could the answer have been worse?
To answer this question, we explore past pageants.
This one takes the cake.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww  And yes, Mario did laugh afterwards. How could you not? This girl just sounded completely ignorant. Ohio's answer was slightly better, but not much.
What is the point of pageants anyway? Is it so women can be paraded around for all eyes to see like a meat market? I try to convince myself that they aren't all stupid (I have friends who have been crowned in major pageants, both of whom are talented, intelligent, young women), but it's really hard sometimes.
If pageants were to focus on what's real instead of what's fake, they might be better. Doubtful, but they might.

Dear Ohio,
There are, in fact, MANY movies and television shows in which women are depicted accurately. They are independent, strong, and have a major contribution to society. Unfortunately, a slight majority portrays them as the weaker gender, but the improvement within the last decade or so has been drastic.

Name a movie, ANY MOVIE, that does not involve a hooker. Anything could have been a better answer! That is one of the most degrading "professions" a woman can enter! It not only shows her lack of self-respect, but makes her out to be a dirty low-life, whether or not she has a friendly disposition or potential for intelligence.
Of course, given my own history of public speaking, my answer would have been stupid but at least it would have been better. I would have said something like ATLA or ATLOK, and none of those girls and probably none of the judges would have understood. Typically, I think the strongest women are in action/adventure movies and shows. It doesn't always have to be physical strength (though I'll admit I favor when a heroine has both physical AND mental strength). Perhaps she's delicate but brilliant and uses her mind as a weapon. I have a few characters like this in my sci-fi I'm writing.
